Historic Willamsburg With Grandpa and Grandma

June 9, 2008

This weekend Aimee's grandpa and grandma were in historic Williamsburg which is only about 2 1/2 hours south of us so we decided to drop in on their vacation. We drove down and Friday night and slept on the couch in their Condo so we could visit Williamsburg with them on Saturday. On the drive down tragedy nearly struck - our air conditioner fan all but quit blowing! For those of you who are not aware the east coast has been under siege from a high pressure system resulting in 100 degree weather with about a thousand percent humidity. So the air conditioner not blowing full power is not a laughing matter. When we got to their condo it wasn't working very well but the next day it seemed to be working perfect so it must have been a fluke that will hopefully not be repeated.

The day in Williamsburg was hot but wonderful. We walked for one shady place to another looking for historic sights, more shade, and if we were lucky a sip of water or air conditioning. At Williamsburg all the people who worked in the historic areas wore traditional clothes that a person in the late 1700's would have worn.

The fellow on the left is dressed in traditional clothing for the time Aimee's Grandpa is on the right.

The day was reached a record high temperature of 98 degrees (the normal for this time of year is about 75) but heat, glaring sunlight, and sunburns hardly even slowed us down. We saw most of the key historic buildings in the historic williamsburgs area including the Capital building, the courthouse (where they would brand your hand or put you in the stocks to punish you for a crime, and the Governor's Palace.

We had it easy real prisoners had unpleasant things thrown at them (we would have appreciated being hit by a water balloon at this time)

Here are the Fife the 18th century marching band that gallantly roused the morale of the villagers.

In some places you could find shady places to try and escape the sun but there was no escaping the heat and humidity!

Before leaving Williamsburg we upgraded our passes so that we could visit again as many times as we want for a year so we will definitely be visiting again. To finish off the day and to cool down we took a cool dip in the pool and slept like 2 bumps on a log.

It was a good time and it was good to see Aimee's grandparents who complained of the heat even less than we did.

You guys look like you do the coolest things! I guess I should say Hottest things, in this case! Just think how hot those guys dressed in the 1700's attire must've been though...
